All though the price of necessity product is increasing frequently but price of tobacco product is remaining same during the last ten years. About twenty million of male and female tobaccos users in the total population and this growth rate are quite threaten. Above the circumstances, non-profit research organization Unnayan Shamannay shared their pre-budget opinion with NBR for increasing tax on all tobacco products to reduce tobacco consumption.
After the pre-budget discussion, Unnayan Shamannay and NBR were jointly organized a press conference on 27 march 2008, 12.00 am at NBR auditorium on “Necessity of Increasing Taxation on Tobacco Product” that should be reflected on the next national budget. The chairman of NBR, Mr. M. A. Mazid and chairman of Unnayan Shamannay Atiur Rahman were present in the conference. Mr. Rahman has given importance on increasing 20% tax on all tobacco products in the next national budget 2008-2009 that would be generated more revenue. This proposal has agreed by the chairman of NBR. He expressed his opinion that he would be taken effective measures to be added tax on total revenue of tobacco product. He also said that it should be good effect on public health for controlling tobacco consumption.
